In 1912 Toledo Metals patented it's adding machine and typewriter stand bases. See our blog for more information about Uhl Art Toledo Metals history. The stands incorporated the locked truss-rail assembly of cold rolled steel that was also used on its stools and chairs.
This is a project piece that will require a small amount of effort and cost for a do-it-yourselfer. It could be painted but a thick coat of clear enamel (applied with a paint brush or spray can found in the paint department of discount stores and hardware stores) will make it sing. Clear coating is like magic when applied atop old paint and rust because it deepens colors and enhances textures. It has the added advantage of slowing corrosion and makes the stand easier to clean and dust.
Home depot sells round wood table tops from 18" to 36" in diameter for under $30.
The base is strong and heavy enough that you could add a 30" top and use it to hold a microwave. We can't recommend it for use as a bistro table because you would be bumping your knees on the stand.

- Condition - About 50% of the surface is covered in deep pitted rust. The stand was originally equipped with casters that are no longer present.
The lift mechanism does operate but without casters is useless. The 3/4" diameter feet are metal and if slid on a hardwood or vinyl floor would be apt to scratch. I failed to find a suitably sized foot rubber online but Lowes sells a nifty product that will protect your floor if the table isn't moved. If you want to replace the casters (which would solve the problem of the metal foot), the interior diameter of the caster post-recept slot is 5/16". - Age - 1920s - 1930s
